A Week of Foundation – 5 Green Options Tested

A Week of Foundations - 5 Green Options Tested

Hey everyone! This week I'm starting a new series called "A Week of ..." where I'll be testing different products within the same makeup category each day of the week. I decided to do 5 products instead of 7 for the simple reason that I work 5 days a week and want to keep my testing to the same conditions every week. That should make it easier to compare products and see how each one performed in the same environment! And this week we're doing foundation!

When I went back to Montreal I discovered a fantastic online store called The Green Jungle that offer samples of so many green beauty products. This is amazing because buying makeup online can be really hit and miss. Return programs are often non existent and I've wasted so much money on products that don't suit me. So when I was there I ordered a whole bunch of foundations to test out, and now's the time to do it. Here we go, our five contestants this week are :

  • VAPOUR ORGANIC BEAUTY - ATMOSPHERE LUMINOUS FOUNDATION
  • FITGLOW BEAUTY -VITA ACTIVE FOUNDATION
  • ELATE CLEAN COSMETICS - FULL TINT FOUNDATION
  • NUI COSMETICS - NATURAL LIQUID FOUNDATION
  • 100% PURE - 2ND SKIN FOUNDATION

I will wear each foundation during a day (Usually from 8 to 6), and report back on the performance. I will be using a beauty sponge on one side of my face and a brush on the other to see what works best. Here are all the options swatched side by side :

VAPOUR ORGANIC BEAUTY - ATMOSPHERE LUMINOUS FOUNDATION

Price: 55$ Shade: 115 Claims: effortlessly beautiful, totally breathable, even skin tone, perfect normal sensitive and dry skin types

This foundation comes in a stick form, so it's quite different than the other ones I'll be trying. My first thoughts when I was applying it is that it does tug on the skin a little because it's so thick. It applies best with a beauty sponge but the brush also gives good results despite needing a bit more effort. In terms of coverage, I think "even skin tone" is the best descriptive. I didn't feel it was COVERING so much but my skin was noticeably more even and the redness not as intense. One thing that fascinates me is that while I can feel it on my skin, it's not tacky at all to the touch which is great. The product has a faint smell that doesn't linger. I loved that I really couldn't see it on my skin, the finish was so natural.

I wore this on a very humid day, so I was a bit worried about how it was going to wear. I wasn't disappointed, after over 8 hours I couldn't see any separation, dryness or anything bad really! In terms of the claims, I wouldn't call this effortless or totally breathable. Despite this though, it holds up to everything else it promises and I was very happy with the results. This is a perfect natural day to day foundation for people who want something simple. Vapour beauty, you get a thumbs up!

FITGLOW BEAUTY -VITA ACTIVE FOUNDATION

Price: 59$ Shade: VF1 Claims: perfect skin tone, nourish skin, diminish spots, freckles, hyperpigmentation, sun damage, and improves elasticity

I'm not gonna lie, day 2 was one of the worst foundation days of my life. The product has a whipped texture and medium coverage. Application was quite difficult as well. The sponge kept lifting the product from my skin and the brush was also unimpressive. I would definitely recommend applying it with your fingers. However, the foundation would keep pilling on my dry patches and picking up on itself. I felt it was sitting on top of my skin rather than actually blending in.

During the day, I noticed the foundation bunching up in areas where I was sweating which was pretty embarrassing. It also separated in dry areas, so much that I took a photo while I was still at work. As far as what the  company claims, a lot of them are long terms and I will never use this long enough to see potential benefits.

I felt terrible wearing this! There's nothing worst than knowing your foundation looks horrible but not being able to just take it off. I'm not sure if I would recommend this for oily skin because of how it reacted to sweat and dry patches. It did look nice in other areas so if you have normal skin you might want to try it. Just make sure you start with a sample...

ELATE CLEAN COSMETICS - FULL TINT FOUNDATION

Price: 27$ Shade: Ecru Claims: natural, light feel, buildable coverage, moisturizing, sun protection

I've been hearing about Elate for a good while now so I was so happy to try this one. The foundation applied well with both the sponge and the brush. Upon close inspection I prefer the finish on the sponge side but really there wasn't much difference. It has a sheer to medium coverage depending on how much you build it up. It was very breathable on the skin and slightly tacky to the touch. In dry areas, it wasn't terrible but wasn't great either, although I think a good primer might be able to help. I will say that the shade Ecru was a bit too orange/dark for me. It's their lightest neutral shade (they have a lighter cool toned one but I stay far away from pink foundations).

It wore incredibly well during the day! When I came home I couldn't see anything bad. As far as the claims, I agree with pretty much all of them. I'm not quite sure why they talk about sun protection because this doesn't seem to have SPF. This is definitely a foundation I will keep trying and experimenting with to see which product combo works best.

Morning - ELATE CLEAN COSMETICS - FULL TINT FOUNDATION
Evening - ELATE CLEAN COSMETICS - FULL TINT FOUNDATION
Swatch - ELATE CLEAN COSMETICS - FULL TINT FOUNDATION
NUI COSMETICS - NATURAL LIQUID FOUNDATION

Price: 68$ Shade: Intense Kanapa Claims: adapts smoothly to skin, long lasting, medium to high coverage

This foundation has a very similar texture to some of my favourite pre-green beauty ones, like the L'Oreal True Match.  It's very creamy without being thick, and heavily fragranced. The smell is like cake but it doesn't linger so I can ignore it. It has a good medium coverage and applied very well with both the sponge and the brush. You can feel it on the skin but it isn't tacky to the touch at all. This was quite surprising because the finish is still natural to dewy! I didn't feel the need to set it with powder at all.

I wore this for my whole work day and also all night for a work BBQ in the blazing heat. It held on incredibly well despite my sweating, and still looked good when I got home! I also want to mention that it never transferred with I toucher my face which is very impressive. As far as claims are concerned, I think it lives up to all of them.

Overall it's not my favourite for dry areas but apart from that it did really great! I think this is a good foundation but it's also the one with the highest price tag, and I'm not sure yet if it's worth that. I'll keep pairing it with other primers and concealers though because I do think it has potential!

100% PURE - 2ND SKIN FOUNDATION

Price: 58$ Shade: #1 Claims: adjustable coverage, natural finish, look and feel of beautiful skin, noticeably brighter, more youthful appearance

Apparently I had to save the best for last, even if I didn't know it! I've heard so many good things about 100% Pure products but they're not cheap so I never took the plunge. This foundation has a very interesting texture. It comes in a glass bottle with a dropper and is incredibly liquid. I recommend shaking the bottle well before using it to make sure the texture is even. I wouldn't apply it with the sponge since it's so liquid (wouldn't want to waste product) but it did fantastic with the brush and with my fingers. The smell however is a little unsettling : minty. I won't lie, I don't enjoy that kind of smell on my face but it dissipated fast so it's fine by me. Because the texture is so thin, this product feels like nothing on the skin. It's the most comfortable of all the ones I tried.

In terms of wear, it looked skin-like all day and faded gracefully in the areas where I do touch my face. It performed flawlessly. Again this isn't the cheapest product but I was so surprised by how little product you actually need to cover your face. I use 2 small drops for my whole face, so I think this would last ages. It holds up to the claims and I can't say enough good things about it. 100% Pure very appropriately named this product 2nd skin, and I have no doubt why.

A Week of Foundation - 5 Green Options Tested

This week was so much fun! I loved seeing the differences between each foundation options. It's now time to do a little recap.

My two favourite options were the ones from 100% Pure & Vapour Beauty. They looked natural on the skin, could be built up if necessary and lasted very well throughout the day. I will keep testing the ones from Elate and NUI to see if they perform differently with other primers or concealers and see if I can make them work. The one I will stay far away from from now on is the Fitglow one. Sorry but I just don't want another horrible foundation day.

In terms of shades, most fit me pretty well. I'm afraid the Elate will be too dark for me when I loose my summer tan, and the NUI is a little light right now so should be perfect then.

Did you ever try any of these foundations?
Do you have other ones to recommend?

  1. Great post. I love when you can get samples of the foundation to give it a proper run for its money. Wish more places did them (or I had the guts to ask at the beauty counter!)

    1. Thanks! Yes samples are the best. I can understand why it’s tricky for some stores to offer samples, but it’s so important especially when it comes to things that will be in contact with your skin! Not everything can work for everyone! When I see it’s available somewhere it’s definitely an incentive to buy from that specific store when I make my choice.
