Beauty Empties – How Toxic are Regular Products? – August 2018

Woah! I feel like it's been so long since I did my last empties. If you didn't read my blog then, here's how it goes : I'm still going through some "regular" products in my transition to the green beauty world. I don't like wasting things so I try and go through everything as much as I can. That being said I think it's really interesting to go over the products I finished up and have a look at the ingredients. I feel like we don't realize what we're putting on our faces, and taking the time to research is important. I had too many products to do everything this time, so I'm concentrating on makeup and we'll do skin & hair care next!

To make things easier, I'll check out the products' ratings on Think Dirty and the Environmental Working Group when I can find it. In case you don't know these databases they classify products according to their ingredients. Zero is totally clean and 10 is toxic. Then I'll highlight the problematic ingredients (if they have any!). Lastly, I'll tell you if I would repurchase it or not. So, how toxic do you think these regular product empties are?

Sprays, Primers & Foundations - Beauty Empties – How Toxic are Regular Products? – August 2018

MAC - FIX +
Rating : Think Dirty 8
Ingredients : Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol & PPG-26-BUTETH-26. These can be toxic and or irritant to the skin.
Would I repurchase : I've loved Fix + for years and years, but because of the ingredients I am actively looking for a replacement!

NYX - DEWY FINISH SETTING SPRAY
Rating : Think Dirty 5
Ingredients : Phenoxyethanol & PVP, which prevents moisture absorption in the skin (therefore helps fixing the makeup).
Would I repurchase : The finish of this setting spray was not natural enough for me. I could see it left a velvety film over my skin and it isn't what I was looking for.

BECCA - FIRST LIGHT PRIMING FILTER
Rating : Not available
Ingredients : Phenoxyethanol & Chlorphenesin.
Would I repurchase : I liked the way this made my skin look, but I didn't feel like it was actually doing anything for my skin. Also I don't buy products with Chlorphenesin anymore.

MUFE - ULTRA HD INVISIBLE COVER FOUNDATION
Rating : Think Dirty 8
Ingredients : Talc, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol & Chlorphenesin. Talc is an irritant and possible carcinogen, sadly used a lot in cosmetics.
Would I repurchase : This was an okay foundation but in no way worth the bad ingredients it has. It didn't perform very well in my dry areas.

LANCOME - TEINT IDOLE ULTRA CUSHION
Rating : Not available
Ingredients : Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Talc, BHT. BHT is also on my list of ingredients I don't buy.
Would I repurchase : I won't lie, this was one of my favourite foundations ever. But now that I know the ingredients, it's just not worth it.

BOURJOIS - HEALTHY MIX SERUM
Rating : Think Dirty 8
Ingredients : Fragrance, Cyclopentasiloxane, Phenoxyethanol & Dimethicone
Would I repurchase : Actually yes! The ingredients aren't perfect but aren't on my specific list of concerns. I think this is a good middle ground option from the drugstore if you're in a pinch.

Benefit Hoola Bronzer - Beauty Empties – How Toxic are Regular Products? – August 2018

BENEFIT - HOOLA BRONZER
Rating : Think Dirty 8
Ingredients : Talc & Parabens
Would I repurchase : I really like the colour of the Hoola so I will try and dupe it. However I will not repurchase a new one.

RIMMEL - MATCH PERFECTION CONCEALER
Rating : Think Dirty 8
Ingredients : Talc, Phenoxyethanol & Dimethicone
Would I repurchase : This is a decent concealer but I would not repurchase

COLLECTION - LASTING PERFECTION CONCEALER
Rating : Not available
Ingredients : Talc, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone & Parabens.
Would I repurchase : I love this concealer, it's cheap and it does the job. However it's got parabens which I actively avoid so I won't repurchase anymore.

MAYBELLINE - INSTANT AGE REWIND DARK CIRCLES ERASER
Rating : Think Dirty 7, EWG 3
Ingredients : Parabens, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethicone & Cyclopentasiloxane
Would I repurchase : No. It's a decent concealer but not worth the ingredients. I'm also not a fan of the sponge applicator.

Concealers - Beauty Empties – How Toxic are Regular Products? – August 2018
Mascaras - Beauty Empties – How Toxic are Regular Products? – August 2018

TARTE - LIGHTS, CAMERA, SPLASHES MASCARA
Rating : Think Dirty 5
Ingredients : Chlorphenesin & Cyclopentasiloxane
Would I repurchase : This mascara looks wonderful on the lashes, but it smudges on me. I think it's also worth noting that the regular formula doesn't have those harmful ingredients!

URBAN DECAY - CANNONBALL WATERPROOF MASCARA
Rating : Not available
Ingredients : Palm products, Phenoxyethanol & Dimethicone
Would I repurchase : No, this smudged on me even without adding water to the mix.

L'ORÉAL - LASH PARADISE MASCARA, WATERPROOF FORMULA
Rating : Not available
Ingredients : Talc & BHT
Would I repurchase : This is a decent mascara but the ingredients aren't worth it for me.

LANCÔME - HYPNÔSE VOLUME-À-PORTER MASCARA
Rating : Not available
Ingredients : Palm products, SLS, EDTA, Phenoxyethanol & Fragrance
Would I repurchase : This made my lashes look good but smudged. It has loads of shady ingredients, and why does mascara need fragrance anyway?

TOO FACED - BETTER THAN SEX MASCARA
Rating : Think Dirty 8
Ingredients : Polyester & PVP for coating the lashes
Would I repurchase : This mascara flakes on me, so I won't repurchase it.

MAC - EXTENDED PLAY MASCARA
Rating : Not available
Ingredients : Talc, Phtalates & PVP
Would I repurchase : Never. This mascara did absolutely nothing for my lashes and smudges on top of it. The ingredient list is also incredibly long and shady.

Are you surprised? Sadly I'm not really. Reading up on ingredients is gruelling and quite difficult to understand, but it's astonishing what goes in our products. The potential consequences for our health and for the planet are monstrous, and well at least it gives me confirmation that green beauty is the way to go. At least for me!

Have you ever tried any of these products? Would you want me to keep doing these posts as I keep going through my old products? Let me know in the comments! xx

  1. Aggghhh I’m terrified now. I need a list of things I can buy. I’ve suffered terribly with illness so really don’t want to be adding to the problem.
